My thoughts the night before election 2024 (or why, as a Christian, I can’t vote for Trump)

With this election, it’s been hard to write anything or come up with anything that makes sense or doesn’t become some form of the repetitive rhetoric being spewed today. Still I felt compelled to write something. So, I decided to jot down some thoughts in my head tonight, the evening before election day 2024 when millions of Americans cast their votes for the next leader of the free world.

I care about the lives that are lost through abortion, but I also care about the women who are having to make that choice. Additionally, I care about them having the resources they need should they decide to keep their baby.

IVF was the only option for me to have a child even if I had found out about my health issues when I was younger. Knowing that that option was possibly being taken away from women in Alabama was heartbreaking. To take away the only way I could have children for a reason that someone else deems is more important than my choice made me furious (it also put into perspective how some women felt when Roe v. Wade was overturned).

JD Vance’s asinine childless cat lady comments also made me furious and hurt (for more on that, go to https://ftoside.com/2024/09/09/forgiven-not-supported/).

I’m tired of Trump taking my belief system hostage. Ever since he first ran for president in 2016, he has appealed to Christians because supposedly supports the policies they do. The big one is Pro-Life. I’ll give him credit, he did put the Supreme Court justices in place that overturned Roe v. Wade. However, because he did that, it’s like he can do whatever he wants because the Christians will vote for him because he helped have Roe v. Wade overturned.

I’m a Christian and have never and will never vote for Trump. Why? Because I don’t like the way he treats other people, especially women. I really don’t like how he talks about people and threatens those who disagree with him (especially journalists). I don’t think he acts in a Biblical way to either of those groups of people.

Ephesians 4:32 says, “Be kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.”

Luke 6:28-30 says:

28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who are abusive to you. 29 Whoever hits you on the cheek, offer him the other also; and whoever takes away your cloak, do not withhold your tunic from him either. 30 Give to everyone who asks of you, and whoever takes away what is yours, do not demand it back.

I haven’t seen Trump at any time model any of these things. Shouldn’t the one who is supported by Christians and claims to be “Anointed by God” to lead this country, live out what is talked about in the Bible? I think so.

The Bible also tells Christians to be on the lookout for false prophets.

Matthew 7:15 says, “Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves.”

Or 2 Corinthians 11:13-15, that says,”13 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. 14 No wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.”

But wait! There’s more!

Colossians 2:8 says, “8 See to it that there is no one who takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception in accordance with human tradition, in accordance with the elementary principles of the world, rather than in accordance with Christ.”

All these verses tell me that Trump is someone who should be avoided and not supported, especially by Christians who are commanded to love one another as Christ also loved you (John 13:34). We are also told to detest what is evil and cling to what is good (Romans 12:9).

Besides all of that, I think Trump gave a big middle finger to America when he refused to participate in the peaceful transfer of power after the 2020 election as well as on Jan. 6, 2021. I also think all those policies that he supposedly supports will go by the wayside if he gets all his crazy supporters in the House and Senate. If that happens, he can do whatever he wants even if it’s not what he promised he would do.

I’m sharing all of this not to make anyone feel bad for who they voted for or who they support. I’m just sharing my thoughts about why I cannot vote for someone. Also, I’m not going to tell you who I’m voting for or who you should vote for tomorrow. I will also love you no matter who you vote for or who you support.

I just hope maybe that what I’ve said gets you to think about some things you hadn’t thought about before. That being said, I know that God will still be in control no matter who is the next president of the United States. I know that the sun will continue to rise and set. I also know that I will continue to love my neighbors, my family, and whoever else God brings into my life. Why? Because that’s what most important no matter who is in charge.
