Two months post-surgery

Paul Stock Trail

It’s been about two months since my surgery, and here is what I’ve noticed so far:

*Sometimes my foot still thinks my big toe is there.

*Sometimes I think my big toe is still there, especially after I hit the nub where it used to be on something. Then the “toe” hurts even though it’s not there.

*Walking up the stairs is fine now. Walking down, however, is still difficult (it’s that balance thing) and probably will be for a long time.

*I’ve realized I’ll only be able to wear sneakers for the foreseeable future. I have a special insole that works better in them.

*I’m still super sad about not being able to wear flip flops or Chacos. Especially the Chacos. When we lived in Las Vegas, I wore them all year round even with my fancy City Council clothes. I have to wait until warmer weather to figure out what kind of sandals I can wear. I also can’t wear Vans or Chuck Taylors regularly anymore. I need more support than they offer.

*My foot gets tired and sore frequently. It usually starts to hurt sometime during fifth period on Wednesdays and gets worse from there. Thankfully, it feels better on the weekend when I’m not on it as much. (I’ve also become creative at elevating it throughout the day).

*I don’t waddle anymore!

*My gait is choppy, my steps smaller, but I’m walking much better than I did a month ago.

*I was going to start training in March for a race sometime during the next year, but I think I’m going to have to wait a bit longer to start 🙁

*I can hike short distances! I went on two-mile hike during a break in the cold weather. My foot was sore after, and I should have elevated it more, but I felt great.
